The Nokia N8 – A classic

The Nokia N8 is in the house! The telecommunication giant Nokia announced that they were creating a cell phone (if it can be said thus!) which could click with 12 mega pixel camera, record video at a staggering 720p and had output via HDMI. On top of all these, the company had also announced that it would be powered by Symbian 3. Since then it has been a long wait of around 7 months. Ultimately, around the year-end of 2010, Nokia launched the beast – N8; whose tag line goes like ‘What will you do with it?’ For you we are putting up a review of the phone.

 Hardware of the Nokia N8

The whole look of the phone is spectacular. You will just love the view when you open that box and bring out the phone. Before we get to the details, here are some specifications.

  • Aluminum Skin
  • Dimensions – 59.12 x 113.5 x 12.9 millimeters
  • Weight – 135 gm
  • Screen – 640*360 of Gorilla Glass AMOLED
  • Memory – MicroSD memory card slot and an internal size of 16GB
  • Processor Speed – 680 Mhz
  • RAM – 256 MB
  • Camera – 12 mega pixel  (Carl Zeiss Lens)
  • Flash – Xenon
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • Wi-fi b/g/n
  • Battery – 1200mAh (The battery offers an awesome stamina)
  • Additional Features – HDMI port, FM transmitter, FM Radio, etc.

The two flaps at the left side are for the memory card and the SIM. Also on the same side is the (weirdly genius) USB port and a Torx screw, so the casing may be opened in case of emergency.  On the right side of the phone, are the patent buttons of Nokia’s smart phone series. There is the Volume controller, the locking slider and the camera button. But you have to switch on the phone first and then click the camera button to do its job.

At the top, there is the HDMI port, the 3.5 mm audio jack and the power button.

Software of the Nokia N8

The revolutionary leap which comes with the N8 is the Symbian 3rd generation OS. N8 is powered by this and it is the first phone to be powered with this software. The screen has an option of 3 swipe-able home screens. The main problem with this Symbian OS is the Texting feature. Along with other disadvantages there’s the inconvenience of not having the automatic T9 predictive input powered on. You have to turn the phone sideways to get the QWERTY keypad. But still, texting remains as much pain as it was before.

The features worth mentioning are its powerful applications; especially its video editing features. Then there is the Social app to access directly to Facebook and Twitter feeds and opens the sites up separately. The Ovi maps GPS system is also available with the update of pinch-and-zoom.

The Nokia N8 -Camera

N8 is a clear winner in this area. With 12 mega pixel camera, the phone is able to capture moments almost as realistically as they appear. Even without turning on the Flash, the camera is able to click clear and usable pictures. Thought Xenon flash takes a back seat in video recording, it is still quite impressive (especially with built in video editing software).

The 12 MP camera phone Nokia N8 is as impressive as it claimed to be, with a few twitches. And it offers so much that you will ask yourself: What will you do with it?
